job.A Brief OverviewUnder the general supervision of the Histology
Services Supervisor, the Lead Electron Microscopist works and
oversees the day to day operations of the Electron Microscopy
Laboratory.
Provides advice, guidance and work priorities to Staff Electron
Microscopists, laboratory assistants and laboratory technicians.
Ensures proper staffing and coverage. Ensures proper handling,
storage, and disposal of laboratory materials and waste. Prepares
and participates in CLIA and/or CAP inspections. Maintains quality
control processes and that safety protocols and procedures are
followed. Ensures cost control and prepares reports as requested.
Manages material supplies for the area including orders, receiving,
reconciling of all clinical supply needs and establishes accurate
reporting mechanism. The Lead Electron Microscopist processes and
sections surgical specimens for examination under light and
electron microscope. Independently examine cellular ultrastructure
for diagnostic and research purposes with photographic and/or
digital imaging documentation. Prepares frozen sections of surgical
specimens, evaluate for adequacy and stain with fluorescent
antibodies for diagnostic and research purposes. Assist residents,
fellows, and faculty in research projects requiring electron
microscopy and immunofluorescent studies. The Lead Electron
Microscopist provides high quality service to faculty, fellows and
residents.

- Develop and implement department specific processes/procedures
and quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing
procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance
to safety/health and state/federal regulations
- Monitors and evaluates machinery, equipment, systems and
supplies to ensure operational efficiency and reliability of
results.
- Prepare technical reports reflecting department process volume,
testing results, analysis, adverse trends, conclusions or
recommendations for management and other hospital
personnel.
- Performs complex and unusual procedures requiring knowledge and
skills gained through experience.
- Oversees laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and
specialized technical procedures. Plans laboratory work
assignments, evaluates work performed and provides direction and
feedback in handling procedural and technical problems.
- Maintains cooperative and professional attitude in when
interacting with others both inter- and
intra-departmentally
- Process and embed specimens for electron microscopy
- Cut both "thick and thin sections" of epoxy-embedded
tissue
- Prepare laboratory solutions, i.e. buffers, stains, fixatives,
etc.
- Independently examine tissues in the electron
microscope
- Produce photomicrographs or digital images of tissue
ultrastructure using darkroom processing and computer imaging
programs
- Cut frozen sections using a cryostat
- Stain frozen sections with fluorescent antibodies
- Assumes responsibility for laboratory technical
results
- Demonstrates an ability and willingness to assume independent
responsibility
- Must comply with all applicable health and safety
policies
- Performs other duties as requested.Education Qualifications
- Associates degree specializing in electron microscopy from an
accredited college or university Experience Qualifications
- 3 years electron microscopy experience Required Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities

sections
- Knowledge of staining procedures and mounting sections for
microscopic examination
- Knowledge of mathematics, general science and laboratory
techniques
- Knowledge of infection prevention policies and
procedures
- Knowledge and technical proficiency in specialty areas as
assigned within the laboratory
- Knowledge of laboratory controls, methods, policies, procedures
and regulatory requirements and federal/state laws defined for the
laboratory and/or hospital Licenses and Certifications
