The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations.JOB PURPOSE:Under general supervision, perform basic technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines.CORE DUTIES:

  • Identify, assess and monitor Food Safety risk factors, workplace and environmental hazards, including but not limited to, chemical, physical and biological. Recommend improvements to prevent foodborne illness and minimize hazard potential.
  • Conduct Food and Workplace Safety inspections and investigations by compiling and analyzing data of potential hazards, unsafe conditions or environmental concerns. Share findings and recommendations to limit risk.
  • Provide technical advice and interpretation of local, state, and federal regulations to achieve compliance with government and university policies.
  • May develop and conduct employee and student training, education, and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities, and/or programs.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Education & Experience:Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and one year experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments/evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).Certifications and Licenses:CFSP, REHS preferred but not required.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.WORKING CONDITIONS:Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments. May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals/asbestos, or heavy metals. May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ---10 feet.WORK STANDARDS:
  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
